Law students preparing for the state bar examination in California can benefit from researching useful strategies. Their familiarity with the testing requirements can also help them feel more confident and prepared.

For students that do not pass the test the first time, they may wish to modify their studying techniques. For law professionals whose licensure expired, the same kind of research may improve their likelihood of passing the exam with a satisfactory score.

Studying strategies

Rigid or inconsistent studying routines can increase exhaustion and reduce motivation. In many cases, such efforts have counterproductive results. According to ABA for Law Students, people can enhance their productivity when they use various methods to study. Some examples include referencing flashcards, using supplemental materials, watching videos and lectures, reviewing course material and participating in preparation courses.

Students can also benefit from finding a healthy balance between studying and taking breaks. Refusing to take a rest or forcing studying can hurt productivity. However, too flexible a schedule can increase stress and lead to procrastination.

Testing components

The state bar exam comprises three parts. According to The State Bar of California, testing components include the following:

  • 90-minute performance test
  • The Multistate Bar Examination (MBE)
  • Five, one-hour essay questions

Students can ask for feedback on mock tests to determine where to focus the majority of their studying efforts. Working with a mentor may reinforce testing concepts and help students feel more confident in their understanding. Physically and mentally disabled students may need testing accommodations. Making these arrangements plenty of time in advance of their test date can reduce undue stress.
