Are you a doctor? It might be time to consider California

California has an aging population — and that’s about to create a big problem when it comes to getting appropriate medical care because there aren’t enough doctors to keep up.

The California Future Health Workforce Commission recently released the results of a study that indicates that the state can expect to have 4,100 fewer primary care physicians than it needs to meet its residents’ needs in the foreseeable future.

There are several contributing factors to the problem, including:

  • The size of California’s population in general
  • The aging Boomer generation that now needs more medical care
  • The fact that many current primary care physicians — approximately one-third of those in the state — are also 55 or older

California’s population of seniors over the age of 65 will approach 9 million in 2030 — which is twice what it is now. The population of those over age 75 will grow even faster.

As a whole, the health care industry isn’t sure how to meet the demand they already know is coming. Not only are facilities having problems filling positions for general practitioners, but they’re also constantly on the lookout for specialists of virtually every variety.

As a whole, this is an excellent time for physicians of any kind to relocate to California. Your services are definitely in need and will remain so in the coming decades. Rural areas and small towns are often hurting more than larger areas when it comes to shortages — making them especially welcoming to new physicians.
